Why does my car sometimes have loss of power and cut out?

Asked by Jul 11, 2015 at 07:06 AM about the 2006 Fiat Punto

Question type: Maintenance & repair

I have a 2006 FIAT Punto 1.2 Active, it rev's at roughly 1500-1800 when it's idle,
sometimes when I start the car up the engine light comes on and my car has loss of
power, starts to shake when it's at 800 revs idling. When I go to set off the car either
cuts out or struggles to move at a speed. I can put my foot down in 2nd gear and only
reach 10-15 mph. My car sometimes doesn't start for roughly 2-3 hours, it's not
sparking/turning over. What could this be?

Have the Idle Air Control Valve cleaned or replaced.

How many miles? When was the last time you did a major service? Is the catalytic converter plugged?
