2003 automatic but 1,2,3 gear options? Does this mean it's a semi automatic? If so, would I need to control the gears

No, I'm pretty sure this is a fully automatic model. The 1, 2, 3, are there so you can choose to put the car into one of those gears if the conditions dictated it, ie. if you were driving on snow, or if you were descending a very steep hill.
