What would cause 1998 Opel Corsa B to Rattle and not idle ?
I own a 1998 Opel Corsa B car, I used is last night and it worked fine, this morning when I used it to drop
someone to work, on the way I began to hear a rattling when ever i accelerated. when not accelerating it
would be quite. upon half way up a hill, the car began to lose pressure, i would press down more of the
gas pedal but it made no difference. It just cut-out and refused to start. after leaving it for a hour, it
started but would not idle. when i try to put it in gear it would cut out. I manage to get it to work a little by
putting it in neutral, start it while riving and the switched it in gear fast. I was able to get it moved
What would cause the rattling?
What would Cause it not to idle?
If the old is low, would it do that?
if there is hole in muffler would it cause that?
What is the easiest fix?
Try the inexpensive fix first. Buy a can of throttle body cleaner. Remove the throttle body and clean it. Buy a new IAC. (Idle Air Control valve) Install new IAC. Before starting car, do this procedure:Once the new valve has been fitted, switch the ignition on, DO NOT start the engine, leave for 10 seconds, turn ignition off, repeat 3 times. Only then, start the engine and take for a drive. If you follow the above procedure, chances are all will be well, problem solved! The above procedure resets your IAC. I took the car to the mechanic yesterday, he then called me last night and told me that I need head gasket, the engine blown. I searched the Internet to find out is the rattle that I heard is a symptoms of a blown head gasket. The car started fine and drive a few 1.5km and then all of a sudden I began to hear the rattling noise, but only when accelarating. The other thing the engine wouldn't idle. I just want to be sure what the problem is before I end up spending money foolishly. So is it a know fact that the rattling noise can be as a result of a blow head or the timing chain tensioner or both ? If the idle control valve failed , I know that would cause it not to idle, but can both problem be as a result of a blown head? I am no mechanic , but no fool either. Apart from the above option, what should I do?
Usually if you have a blown head gasket, you will either have coolant in the oil, (milky oil) or you should have a lot of very white smoke out of your exhaust. (Burning coolant) Can you smell anti-freeze under the hood? If you are only experiencing a rattle noise, I would have your engine pressure tested to make sure the head gasket is blown. I would have that test done at a different shop. A bad or leaky head gasket does not mean that your engine is blown. If they are telling you that, I would definitely take it elsewhere. Your rattle issue could be a loose heat shield on the exhaust or you may have a loose motor mount. Also, a no idle issue is not a blown head gasket symptom. DId the garage say they preformed a pressure test? What was there evidence for a blown head? I went under the hood and did a old check, to see if it was low and the light was not working. The was more that enough oil, I was not even half (off course, I check it while the car was park in a flat surface and after it cool down for 1/2 hour or so) The oil just looked old to indicate it needed changing, but for sure not milky, white or out of the color that it should be). I am not so sure about the smoke cause I don't really pay attention to that. I am been experiencing another problem, but I believe I know the problem to that. The end of the selector cable (gear-box) where the rubber head is, broke off a long time again, I came loose twice since I have the car, but I have it secured properly, so when i go to reverse (all the time) there is a little play and I have to rev a little or move off very slow form the spot. before the car start to reverse properly. But that should have anything to do with my current problem or cause it right?
If you are burning coolant, all you have to do is start the car. If it billows white thick smoke, you will be able to see it quite easily. If you live in a state where it is very cold, don't be fooled by thinking it's burning coolant. It will look like it, just because it's very cold out. Your cable problem shouldn't be affecting your idle. Like I said before, I wouldn't trust that garage. Bring it elsewhere for a pressure test. Don't tell them that another garage said you have a blown head gasket. They may just say the same thing to make money off of you. A head gasket job will run you some big money.
