Car speed and power

Asked by Jun 26, 2017 at 06:45 AM about the 2005 Honda Civic

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When my car reaches 60mph it looses power and
won't go any faster along with a check engine light.
This problem happens intermittently. Now last
week on the motorway the car was OK then when I
reached 70mph   the car broke down so an
engineer checked the engine and said it was the
crank shaft sensor, so he replaced it and do a week
later the car is doing the same thing, any ideas?
Additional : when the car looses power I think it's
the 2nd and 3rd gearS power is very low. this car is
a 1.7 diesel

This seems to be a very common problem with this engine but unfortunately the measures taken to solve the problem are very varied. Some people have replaced the turbo to cure it, others have replaced various sensors, but one thing that seems common to several cars is that the EGR valve (Exhaust gas recirculation) can get very clogged up and this needs to be either cleaned or replaced. I'd try this first but if it doesn't cure the problem I would take it to a garage to have the fault codes read again. Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

Cheers for the advice. May seem silly question but do diesel engines have an EGR?

Yes, as far as I know all modern diesel engines have them. Your car definitely has one. Cheers, Bob

Hi. Thanks for your help. I took it to a garage and the mechanic said he thinks it's the turbo and said it wasn't worth replacing as they cost £600-£700 however he did block off the EGR valve, I mentioned cleaning it but said it wasn't worth it. The car seems fine but I haven't been over 50mph yet so I will keep you posted. Cheers everyone.

Thanks for the update. The EGR delete by blanking it off does seem quite a common modification on these cars. Hope it cures the problem and that it's not the turbo at fault!
