How can I import this car?

Asked by Feb 18, 2014 at 03:43 PM about the 2003 Smart Roadster

Question type: Shopping & pricing

Its a 2003 Smart Roadster. I've done plenty of research and I have noticed that
everyone says its illegal... As far as i can see the NHTSA says that any car can be
imported, As I dug deeper I noticed this was a lie. If it meets the EU's anal testing then
it sure as hell will meet the EPA and DOT requirements. So right now I have no idea
where to go and if I get one in this country what will happen. If anyone knows anything
or maybe even has imported one please help me. All i'm saying is that if you can drive
a pickup that's been rusted to pieces and bellows out black diesel smoke i think that i
should be able to import a 3cyl mid engine rear wheel drive lightweight sports car that
gets 40-50mpg.

In order to import a car to the United States it must meet all safety and emissions standards for it's model year. HTH. -Jim
