This was the last year the pre-Cross flow engine came out in English Fords. In RSA we had the 1300, 1500 and 1500GT models. 1968 saw the first Cross-Flow "Kent" Engines. If you come across a cross flow 1600 engine with an SA at the beginning or end of thee engine number , it was made in South Africa and these blocks could be bored out to more then the original UK blocks.

My 1965 Ford Cortina GT had 84 hp, with a dual weber carb, progressive linkage, tuned exhaust, 1500 CC engine. 0-60 in 9.8 seconds. I did the 1/8 of a mile at the track in 11 seconds flat. My only problem was starting the car in the height of the winter in NYC. Wouldn't start, had to have it jumped. Had it for 50,000 miles and really loved it. Went from NYC to Montreal, Canada at a lovely 75 mph with 29 mpg every other weekend for 6 months. Deadly fast for a small car in its day. Could give 62" Caddy a run for its money over a 1/4 mile distance.
