bmw 318i red oil light coming on with red wavy line underneath after a long drive, what is this?

This is the warning light to inform you that your engine oil level is too low. You should top it up immediately. Switch the engine off and wait five minutes or so to let the oil drain back into the sump and then check the level on the dipstick - it should be between the minimum and maximum marks. If it's on minimum then one litre of oil will get it back to the correct level. If the oil level is correct then it is likely you have a problem with your oil level sensor which may need changing.
