Help! Car won't start

Asked by Jul 06, 2017 at 02:57 AM about the 2000 Mercedes-Benz A-Class 1.4 A140 Avantgarde auto

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hey guys so my car has been running fine and has
recently been serviced but yesterday I had the heater on
during a rainy night and the car just stalled and finally
stopped. It won't start up, the light come on and a
continuous faint roar(light a wheezing cough) but won't
start. The battery is fine and no warning lights were
displayed apart from "a division sign follows by 120
degrees Celsius". Is it the engine? What could be the
problem?

It's very hard to tell what might be wrong from your description but I think the heater being on and it being rainy is just a coincidence. I'm pretty sure the symbol under the mileage readout is simply saying it's +12 degrees centigrade outside. From the sounds of it you either have a problem with the starter motor, but I think it's more likely that there's a problem with the timing chain on the engine. Don't keep trying to start it as you could do further damage. It could just be that the timing chain tensioner has failed, or it could be the timing chain itself. This is quite a common failure on these engines. I would either get a mobile Mercedes specialist to come and have a look at it or get it towed to a Mercedes Specialist for diagnosis. Good luck and let us know how you get on.
