Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This forum looks great so hoping you can advise...
Every cold morning I try to start car and engine
turns over but just won't actually start. Hook up to
jump leads off my husbands car and literally starts
immediately. Invariably when it's trying to
star/turning over the coolant alert comes on
(coolant levels look fine btw). Had the battery
checked and apparently it's "fine"... Such a pain
each morning when it's cold..help!! Is it battery?
Thanks in adavance (ps not sure of the exact model
details from the massive drop down list below!!
...it's s-line 5 door TDI

Hi there, sorry to hear you're having cold start problems, not much fun when you want to get going in the morning! There are a number of problems that can affect this engine (in VWs too) but I think your first course of action would be a new battery. If it always starts first time once it's connected up to your husband's car I'd be pretty sure that's your problem. If the battery is the car's original one you've done pretty well to get 11 years out of it. If you buy a replacement get a good quality one... it's not worth scrimping. I found this out recently with a six-month old cheaper battery that went bad. I'd get one from Bosch (or another quality company), and make sure it's the right size for your car – from memory I think it's a 70AH battery, but do check. The coolant alert is most likely due to low battery as the sensor actually uses current across a short distance to tell if the fluid is low... or you could have a faulty sensor. Does the coolant alert happen when you jump start it from your husband's car? If not, this is another pointer to a duff battery. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thankyou so very much. I was unsure about going for a new battery if it wasn't the battery. If I recall correctly mine is probably 4 years old and was a "average" buy from Halfords. Will research the more suitable ones and blow the cobwebs from my wallet! Thank you again for such a swift reply. Will definitely update.

Oh and coolant alert doesn't come on when jump starting....
