How much gear oil should I put in my VW Polo classic 2003 model sedan 1.6?

Assuming this is a manual transmission I'm pretty sure the capacity is 2.0-litres. If you fill the gearbox with oil until it starts to come out of the fill hole then you know you've put enough in (assuming the car is sitting on level ground).
