The 2005 Volkswagen Golf represents the fifth-generation version of the German firm’s all-conquering family hatchback. The Mk5 went on sale in the UK in 2004 and was available in both three-door and five-door hatchback body styles, but the 2005 version came before the five-door estate variant became available in 2007. The Mk5 was a huge improvement on the Mk4 it replaced, with a much more sophisticated rear suspension giving it the deft ride-and-handling balance to trouble even the Ford Focus of the time. It felt posh inside, it had a practical cabin, and it looked super-smart and had a posh image. Everything a Golf should be, then.

## Is the 2005 Volkswagen Golf better than the 2005 Honda Civic? That depends on what you’re after. If you’re after a sophisticated-feeling driving experience, with a smooth ride, deft handling and slick controls, then the VW will suit you better. It also has a more ergonomically sound dashboard and better rear visibility. However, if you want your car to be reliable - and we can’t see why you wouldn’t - then choose the Honda. It had a great record in this regard, where the Mk5 Golf was fraught with issues.
