The sharp, angular styling of the 2013 Honda Civic isn’t quite as futuristic as that of its immediate predecessor (built up to 2011), but it’s still a distinctive-looking car – and Honda worked hard to improve the interior quality for this generation of Civic. Being a Honda, it’s also likely to be among the most reliable family hatchbacks around. And although some of the engines aren’t among the best in class, the 1.6-litre diesel model is particularly impressive. A Ford Focus is definitely more fun to drive, however.

The 2013 Ford Focus is much more lively to drive than the 2013 Honda Civic, has a better range of engine options overall, and is equally practical. It’s the Honda that’s likely to provide the more reliable family motoring, however.
