The 2013 Mercedes-Benz A-Class marked the arrival of the third generation of the German firm’s compact hatchback. While the first two iterations of the model had been quite innovative in their design, the third one was far more conventional, with a more regular five-door shape. It was also bigger, making it roomier, and it boasted a high-quality interior and plenty of standard equipment on most versions. As a premium compact hatchback, it competed with rivals such as the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. Both felt equally posh inside, but crucially, both were better to drive than the A-Class.

The 2013 Mercedes A-Class wasn’t a terrible car, but the contemporary Audi A3 was an exceptional one. The Audi felt every bit as posh inside, but in five-door Sportback form, it was considerably more practical for both passengers and luggage. It was also far better to drive, with a comfier ride, sharper handling, and more potent performance.
