When the original Mercedes GLA was first released back in 2014, it was little more than an A-Class hatchback with a slightly jacked-up suspension and some chunkier bumpers. Compared with other small SUVs, it had some fairly fundamental flaws as a result, but regardless, it still proved to be quite popular. Having got away with one, Mercedes made much more of an effort with the second-generation version, of which the 2021 Mercedes GLA is an example, and it’s a far more compelling car as a result. It looks good, it’s good to drive, it’s more spacious, it feels posh inside and it has a fantastic infotainment system.

Rear headroom could be more generous
Not cheap compared with rivals
Slightly fidgety low-speed ride

Is the 2021 Mercedes GLA better than the 2021 BMW X1?

Well, it’s certainly a lot more competitive than the first-generation GLA was when compared to its rival from Munich. Both cars offer decent practicality, a posh-feeling cabin, an excellent infotainment system, and a sophisticated driving experience. Which you choose will be down to personal taste, and you’ll probably be happy with either.
