In a world where almost every manufacturer is busy making a host of SUVs, a Range Rover still stands apart. And the 2008 Range Rover Sport is a fine example of that. Despite being based on the same platform as the more humble Land Rover Discovery, this first-generation Range Rover Sport manages to convey the same imperious sense of occasion – and of heritage – that the full-size Range Rover pulls off so effortlessly. And yet it does so in a more compact, affordable form. That being said, the potential repair bills are enough to make your eyes water.

The Range Rover has more of an impressive heritage when it comes to full-on off-roaders, but the reputation for high maintenance and running costs of the Range Rover Sport might put some people off.
