If you’re old enough, you might remember that the Skoda brand was, once upon a time, the butt of many automotive jokes, because its cars weren’t awfully good. The Fabia is one of the models that helped turn that reputation around, and the 2011 Skoda Fabia represents the second generation of the Czech firm’s supermini contender. Not that it was particularly mini, mind. The Fabia was one of the biggest and roomiest cars in the class, making it one of the most practical, and if that wasn’t enough, an estate version was also offered for even more versatility. True to the Skoda way, it was great value for money, too, and it was also a very decent car to drive.

Strengths:

Huge amounts of space and practicality
Great value for money
Comfortable on the road

Weaknesses:

Rather drab, plasticky interior
Entry-level models short of power and kit
Not very exciting, to drive or to look at

Is the 2011 Skoda Fabia better than the 2011 Volkswagen Polo?

The two cars actually share a lot, because both are built on the same platform and share engines and other componentry, by virtue of the fact that Skoda is owned by the Volkswagen Group. If you’re after the poshest-feeling and most desirable car that your money will buy, it’s definitely the VW you’ll want for its higher-grade interior and alluring badge. However, if you want as much space and practicality as your money will get you, and you’d ideally like to spend a good deal less of it, then the Skoda is the way to go.
