It feels well built, and the understated styling helps the Polo feel like a premium product. That sensible styling also somehow makes the car feel larger than it actually is, which contributes to the grown-up feel. On the other hand, a MINI is clearly more glamorous, and a Ford Fiesta or Seat Ibiza are more fun to drive. The Polo GTI is a particular disappointment in that department.
