This is the 2027 BMW X5 – an all-new, fifth-generation version of BMW’s luxury family SUV. It features BMW’s latest design language, some mind-boggling tech features and will be available with pure-electric power for the first time when it goes on sale in spring 2027.
Here’s the full lowdown on the 2027 BMW X5.
2027 BMW X5: Price, Specs and Release Date

2027 BMW X5: styling and dimensions
The BMW X5 has evolved subtly over the course of its first four generations but it looks very different in its new, fifth-generation form. That’s because it adopts BMW’s latest ‘Neue Klasse’ design language – as seen on the new i3 and iX3.
At first glance the X5 looks like a scaled-up iX3. The similarity is especially strong at the front, where, like the iX3, the X5 has a version of BMW’s traditional ‘kidney grille’ at the centre of a flush horizontal panel that contains the headlights. The big news here is a new ‘double X’ light signature, although you can switch this to simpler diagonal light strips, as seen in the image below.
The side profile of the X5 is also similar to the iX3’s, while both cars have distinctive rectangular creases above the wheel arches. Look carefully and you’ll see that the X5 differs in its distinctive ‘winglet’ door handles. Similar to those of the new Volvo EX60, these are small, upturned protrusions at the base of the B- and C-pillar that help to reduce aerodynamic drag. Depending on trim, there are 21-inch, 22-inch or 23-inch alloy wheels.
At the rear, the X5 has the now-familiar ‘Neue Klasse’ look, with a horizontal lighting strip intersected by a scoop in the bodywork that incorporates the BMW emblem. One major change is the switch to a conventional one-piece boot lid – every previous X5 has had a two-piece split tailgate, where the lower section opens downwards.
While the new X5 is 59mm (just over two inches) longer than the previous model, it’s 4mm narrower and 14mm lower.

2027 BMW X5: interior design and practicality
The interior of the new X5 is wildly different to the outgoing model’s but it’ll look very familiar if you’ve seen inside the new i3 or iX3. Like those cars, the 2026 X5 features BMW’s ‘free-cut’ centre display screen. There’s a similarly complex-looking steering wheel design, as well as the same BMW Panoramic Vision display, which projects information onto a display that runs across the base of the windscreen.
As you’d expect of a luxury SUV, the X5 ramps things up in terms of features and materials. Artificial leather upholstery is standard, with premium leather as an option. The optional ‘Glass Controls’ pack includes a gear selector, volume controls and adjusters made from cut glass, as well as trim elements made using a layer of genuine slate.
BMW says that interior space has improved thanks to a longer wheelbase, while a panoramic glass roof is standard. Boot space is up by five litres to 655 litres to the load cover, or 1,850 litres with the rear seats folded. Unlike the outgoing model there’s no option of third-row seating for the new X5 – if you want a seven-seater BMW SUV you’ll have to go for an X7.

2027 BMW X5: engines and driving dynamics
At launch, the X5 will be available with a choice of mild-hybrid diesel or petrol-electric plug-in hybrid (PHEV) power. And for the first time there’ll also be a pure-electric version called iX5. All have ‘xDrive’ four-wheel drive as standard.
The diesel and PHEV versions both have 3.0-litre six-cylinder engines. The PHEV models have pure-electric ranges of just over 60 miles, which is very competitive for a luxury SUV. The all-electric iX5 will initially be available with just one battery/electric motor combination, featuring a mammoth 141 kWh battery pack that gives a maximum range of 525 miles. That’s well ahead of most other large SUVs and, as of July 2026, puts it in the top five for electric cars with the longest range in the UK.
