This is the 2027 Volvo XC40, an updated version of the hugely popular compact SUV. It features a range of cosmetic changes inside and out, as well as updated tech features. It’s due on sale in early 2027, nine years after it first went on sale.

The XC40’s exterior styling updates look subtle but they’re surprisingly far-reaching: everything ahead of the windscreen is new, while the rear bumper, lights and tailgate are also completely redesigned.
At the front, there are new headlights, bonnet and grille that give the XC40 a similar look to the latest versions of the large XC60 and XC90. Standout features include a fresh interpretation of Volvo’s ‘Thor’s Hammer’ light signatures, more intricately shaped headlights, diagonal grille inserts and a much simpler design for the lower section of the bumper.
There’s no change at the side, although you can expect a raft of new alloy wheel designs to be available. At the rear there are slimmer, darker tail lights, a new tailgate and a more sculpted bumper that give the XC40 a sharper, chunkier appearance.
The same changes have been applied to the EX40, the pure-electric version of the XC40. The coupe version of that car – the EC40 – gets the same changes at the front, but its rear end is unchanged.
Volvo hasn’t given details of the updated XC40’s dimensions but they should be all-but identical; any change in length due to the new bumpers is likely to be minimal. As it stands, the XC40 has classic mid-size SUV dimensions, closely matching those of rivals such as the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Range Rover Evoque.
While the interior design is fundamentally unchanged, there’s an updated wireless device charger and new fabrics and trim inserts. Arianne Cardamom (beige-ish) leather upholstery paired with Brown Ash trim is an all-new combination.
Although the XC40 was available as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) until 2023, there’s no word on whether a PHEV could be reintroduced to the range in the future.
