I used to own a 2000 VW. It had an electric fan as well, The fan would stay onfor upto 20 minutes in summer. However, one day I noticed itvwas sill on 2 hours after I parked it. Turns out itvwas the electronic temp sensor that had failed. It was located1/2 way downthe sideof the radiator. Easy to replace.
