Which component(s) of the ignition system do I replace on a Chrysler pt cruiser?
Dashboard lights come on and engine cuts out intermittently. Sometimes the
engine management light stays on.
This is a tricky one as it could be so many different things Knight_Rider. It could be the EGR valve, or the EGR solonoid, or it could be something as simple as a split hose in the induction system... or it could be a faulty sensor. Realistically I would check all the hoses especially the small boost hose directly under the EGR inflow control valve as it's very common to split and cause faults like this – if it's not this I would take it to a garage for a diagnostic check other wise you could randomly replace several parts before finding the one that's causing the fault. Hope this helps
The reason I had assumed ignition system is that moving the key while in motion causes the lights to come on and engine to cut out. However replacing the key barrel has made no difference. Thanks for your help. Nigel
Ah, could be a different problem. Does moving the key still cause the light to come on/engine cut out? And how much are you moving the key... a gentle touch or more than that? Maybe it has a wiring fault?
I thought the lock barrel had worn due to weight of keys over 10 years and 105000 miles. There is only normal movement in the key particularly now there is a new barrel. Our service mechanic suggests it needs a new ignition switch but asking for this at the Chrysler dealer is not sufficient. A gentle touch on the key will cause the dash lights to come on and engine to stutter/cut out. Thanks again. Nigel
It looks like this is a common problem having done a bit more research. Have you heard of these people: http://www.ptcompany.co.uk/catalogue/maintenance 7.htm#11 Maybe they can give advice... they sell several different ignition switches. Good luck!
Switch now installed and problem is resolved. CarGurus 1 Chrysler Jeep Dealer 0 !! Many thanks for your help. Nigel
