Overview

Fun is a pretty intangible concept, but there’s no doubt that the 2005 MINI Cooper has it in spades. This, part of the first generation of MINI designed under the stewardship of parent company BMW, is a car that’s enormous fun to drive thanks to its willing engine, compact dimensions (okay, not compared with the classic 1959 Mini) and agile handling. It’s also fun to look at and to be in and, although now a relatively old car, steel feels relatively up to date. Sure, it’s not exactly spacious in the back and the boot is pretty tiny, but this is probably a car you will buy with your heart rather than your head.
Strengths:
Characterful retro looks
Hugely entertaining to drive
Still plenty of good examples, despite the car's age
Weaknesses:
Poor standard kit
Some reliability issues
Cramped inside
Is the 2005 MINI Cooper better than the 2005 Volkswagen Polo?
Choosing between a 2005 Volkswagen Polo and a 2005 MINI Cooper is simply a matter of priorities. If you want it to look good, be fun to drive and to put a smile on your face, go for the MINI. If you want cheap, dependable and practical grown-up motoring in a small package, then it’s the Polo that gets the nod.
