With the second-generation 1 Series - codenamed F20 - being released in 2011, the 2010 BMW 1 Series was the final year of the first-generation car’s reign. The E87, as it was known, was offered in five-door hatchback, three-door hatchback, two-door coupe and two-door convertible forms (in later generations, the coupe and convertible variants would be rebadged and sold as the 2 Series). Unconventionally for the class, the 1 Series was rear-wheel drive rather than front-wheel drive. This gave it really entertaining handling, but also meant cramped rear seats and a small boot. This means you’ll have to value fun over practicality if it’s going to suit you.

Strengths:

Fantastic handling and steering
Engines are punchy and economical
Classy feeling interior

Weaknesses:

Limited rear space and boot space
Ride is firm, especially on racier M Sport models
Plenty of reliability issues reported

Is the 2010 BMW 1 Series better than the 2010 Audi A3?

Deciding between these cars is actually pretty easy. Both deliver as much as you’d want or expect in the way of interior quality, prestige desirability, power and efficiency, but beyond that, the character of the two becomes quite different. If you need practicality, then the more conventionally designed front-wheel-drive Audi is the one to go for, no question. If you care more about fun than functionality, though, the BMW is the more enjoyable car to drive.
