There have been three iterations of the BMW 1 Series up until this point, and the 2016 1 Series was an example of the second-generation car, sold between 2011 and 2019. Like the first-generation car - and unlike the third-generation version, much to the annoyance of some - the Mk2 1 Series was rear-wheel drive, rare in a class where front-wheel drive is the norm. That gave it sensational handling and made it a right laugh to drive, but it also resulted in comparatively tight rear space and a small boot. So, whether it’ll suit you or not will depend on which of those factors is most important to you.

## Is the 2016 BMW 1 Series better than the 2016 Audi A3? It’s a great question, because both cars are really, really good. Those are the factors that will make your decision for you, because there’s nothing in it for quality, equipment, infotainment and prestige clout.
