The first two generations of the BMW 1 Series were rear-wheel drive, which was good for delivering a car that was fun to drive, but not so good for practicality, as the running gear takes up passenger and luggage space. The 2020 BMW 1 Series, however, is part of the third generation of 1 Series – known as the F40 to BMW enthusiasts – and this is front-wheel drive, except for certain four-wheel-drive models. This means there’s more space than before for passengers and luggage, yet the switch to front-wheel drive somehow doesn’t compromise BMW’s traditionally engaging driving experience.
