Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very attractive styling | Not as comfortable or refined as German rivals |
| Ferocious performance from Quadrifoglio | Some owners report electrical gremlins |
| Emotional appeal of the Alfa badge | No estate version |
Quick Summary
The Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016-present) is a leftfield choice in the premium compact executive saloon segment, offering distinctive Italian styling and emotional appeal that sets it apart from the usual Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class crowd. Whilst the interior quality and build finish don't quite match German rivals, the imaginatively designed dashboard, excellent driving position and generous interior space provide genuine appeal. The 2019 facelift brought significant improvements, including a superior 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and enhanced cabin materials.
The Giulia delivers an intoxicating driving experience on the right roads, with super-quick steering and plenty of grip. Engine options range from efficient 2.2-litre diesels to turbocharged 2.0-litre petrols, all paired with a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox. The range-topping Quadrifoglio offers bonkers 503bhp performance. Running costs are reasonable, with diesels returning over 50mpg and petrols achieving mid-30s figures. Service intervals are generous, and used examples represent excellent value compared to German competitors.
Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive Italian styling and emotional appeal, those wanting to stand out from the German saloon crowd, and drivers who value engaging performance and character over clinical refinement.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum comfort and refinement, buyers needing an estate option, or drivers concerned about potential electrical issues.

The Verdict
You should buy the Giulia if: You seek distinctive Italian styling and emotional appeal, want to stand out from the German saloon crowd, or value engaging performance and character over clinical refinement.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum comfort and refinement, need an estate option, or are concerned about potential electrical issues.
Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Giulia is a compelling alternative to German rivals, offering greater emotional appeal and character despite not bettering them in any particular area. Whilst the BMW 3 Series edges ahead on expert rating and the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class match it on overall CarGurus rating, the Giulia stands out with the highest user rating (4.8/5) and exceptional value, with 45.9% good or great deals available. It's the choice for those willing to trade some refinement for distinctive styling, engaging driving dynamics and the intoxicating appeal of the Alfa badge. Used examples represent remarkable value compared to German competitors.
