Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very attractive styling	Not as comfortable or refined as German rivals
Ferocious performance from Quadrifoglio	Some owners report electrical gremlins
Emotional appeal of the Alfa badge	No estate version

Quick Summary

The Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016-present) is a distinctive Italian saloon designed to stand out from the conventional German executive car crowd. Whilst it may not match rivals like the Audi A4 for interior quality or the BMW 3 Series for refinement, the Giulia possesses considerable charm and emotional appeal. The cabin features an imaginatively designed dashboard and excellent driving position, though build quality is somewhat behind German standards, with rough surfaces and panel gaps evident. A 2019 facelift improved interior quality and introduced an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a 7.0-inch TFT instrument display later upgraded to 12.3 inches.

The Giulia delivers an engaging driving experience with super-quick steering and impressive grip, though the firm suspension can feel noisy on UK roads. Engine options include 2.2-litre diesels (158bhp and 187bhp), a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol (197bhp and 276bhp), and the range-topping 503bhp Quadrifoglio offering bonkers performance. All models feature a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Running costs are reasonable, with diesels achieving over 50mpg and petrol models returning mid-30s mpg. Service intervals are annual or every 9,000 miles for petrol cars, with 12,000-mile intervals for diesels. The Giulia represents excellent value for money as a used purchase, offering Italian elegance and engaging performance at competitive prices.

Best for: Buyers seeking a distinctive alternative to German rivals, those valuing emotional appeal and engaging driving dynamics, and drivers wanting Italian style with strong performance credentials.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum comfort and refinement, buyers requiring an estate option, or drivers concerned about potential electrical issues.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Giulia if: You seek a distinctive alternative to German rivals, value emotional appeal and engaging driving dynamics, or want Italian style with strong performance credentials.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum comfort and refinement, require an estate option, or are concerned about potential electrical issues.

Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016-present) is a compelling choice for buyers willing to trade some German refinement for Italian character and engaging performance. Whilst the BMW 3 Series edges ahead on overall quality and the Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4 offer superior comfort, the Giulia's distinctive styling, emotional appeal, and excellent value proposition make it a highly attractive proposition. The Quadrifoglio variant offers superb performance at a fraction of German hot saloon prices. For those seeking something different from the executive saloon norm, the Giulia delivers an intoxicating experience that greater than the sum of its parts.
