Aston Martin DBX (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Exceptional ride and handling	No hybrid or electric versions
Colossal performance	Dated infotainment and borrowed switchgear
Surprisingly capable in off-road driving	Not as fast as a Lamborghini Urus

Quick Summary

The Aston Martin DBX (2020-present) is the British marque's first SUV and represents a significant departure from its sports car heritage. Developed on a bespoke platform rather than borrowed architecture, the DBX combines the practicality of a high-riding vehicle with genuine Aston Martin driving dynamics. With 632 litres of boot space, a full-length panoramic roof, and accommodation for five occupants, it offers surprising practicality. The 542bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 delivers a wonderful blend of power and refinement, whilst the sophisticated suspension system with three-chamber air springs and active anti-roll bars ensures both comfort and responsive handling.

Running costs are substantial, with real-world fuel consumption around 17mpg and premium insurance, servicing, and tyre expenses to consider. The infotainment system and switchgear feel dated, borrowed from Mercedes-Benz, which detracts from the sense of exclusivity. However, the DBX remains the most rewarding and engaging car in its class, offering exceptional off-road capability alongside daily comfort and performance. It's a true Aston Martin, regardless of its SUV form, and has proved crucial to the company's financial recovery.

Best for: Wealthy buyers seeking a high-performance SUV with genuine driving engagement, those valuing British engineering and heritage, and drivers who want off-road capability without compromising on-road dynamics.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking lower running costs, drivers wanting the latest infotainment technology, or buyers prioritising hybrid or electric powertrains.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the DBX if: You're a wealthy buyer seeking a high-performance SUV with genuine driving engagement, value British engineering and heritage, or want off-road capability without compromising on-road dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, seeking lower running costs, prioritising the latest infotainment technology, or requiring hybrid or electric powertrains.

Competitive Position: The Aston Martin DBX stands apart from its rivals through its bespoke platform and exceptional driving dynamics. Whilst the BMW 3 Series scores higher overall and the Range Rover L405 offers greater practicality and heritage, the DBX delivers the most engaging and rewarding driving experience in the luxury SUV segment. It combines colossal performance with surprising off-road capability and a refined ride, making it the finest choice for discerning drivers who refuse to compromise on driving pleasure. The DBX's dated infotainment system is its primary weakness, but this is offset by its superior handling and the prestige of owning a true Aston Martin.
