Audi A1 (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Understated good looks | Pricey compared to similar cars with mainstream badges |
| Very practical for a small car | Firm ride when fitted with big alloy wheels |
| Free-revving petrol engines | No electric or hybrid version |
Quick Summary
The Audi A1 (2018-present) is a premium small hatchback that delivers the solidity and lustre of the four-rings badge at a more accessible price point. The second-generation model features a five-door Sportback body, offering improved practicality and a more sensible take on the MINI. With a 335-litre boot, split-folding rear seats, and comfortable rear passenger space, it punches above its weight in terms of interior packaging. The range includes four petrol engines from the 94bhp 1.0-litre 25 TFSI to the 197bhp 2.0-litre 40 TFSI, all delivering sweet, free-revving performance with pliant ride comfort and neat, predictable handling.
Technology and equipment levels rival much larger cars, with all models featuring 10.3-inch digital dials and an 8.8-inch MMI touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Running costs are reasonable, with most engines achieving 40-45mpg in moderate use, whilst insurance sits at group 20 for the popular 30 TFSI Sport. The A1 holds its value exceptionally well, and Audi's fixed-price servicing plans offer peace of mind. This is a grown-up-feeling car that excels as a composed, stable motorway companion with a premium interior and genuine solidity.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium small car with excellent practicality, those valuing understated design and quality interiors, and drivers who appreciate composed, comfortable driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers prioritising lower purchase prices, those seeking the sharpest handling dynamics (like a MINI), or customers wanting electric or hybrid powertrain options.

The Verdict
You should buy the A1 if: You seek a premium small car with excellent practicality, value understated design and quality interiors, or appreciate composed, comfortable driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious and prioritise lower purchase prices, seeking the sharpest handling dynamics, or require electric or hybrid powertrain options.
Competitive Position: The Audi A1 (2018-present) is a standout choice in the premium small car segment, offering superior practicality and quality compared to rivals like the Fiat 500, whilst matching the MINI and Volkswagen Polo for overall appeal. It feels noticeably more premium than mainstream alternatives, with an exceptionally well-appointed interior and composed driving experience. Whilst the MINI offers sharper handling and the Polo provides excellent value, the A1's combination of understated design, spacious interior, free-revving engines, and strong value retention makes it an excellent choice for discerning buyers who appreciate quality and practicality without compromise.

4.7 Overall rating
(8 reviews)It is a very good car for me as I'm a beginner, stylish and fast, brilliant 1st car
perfect great value, couldnt be more happy, stunning car condition
I loved it! Nice drive, compact, comfortable and stylish and hit all of my needs.
Lovely simple design. Unfortunately no rear parking sensors! Good value for an upmarket car
High quality interior, in my opinion, better than the current model that replaces it. Refined engine and transmission (7 speed steptronic). Be careful which suspension/wheel set up you go for. We traded in another A1 for this example as the other had S Line sports suspension and very low profile tyres, giving a harsh ride. If you prefer comfort over outright handling, opt for the softer suspension and higher profile tyres, makes a world of difference.
