Audi A1 (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Understated good looks | Pricey compared to similar cars with mainstream badges |
| Very practical for a small car | Firm ride when fitted with big alloy wheels |
| Free-revving petrol engines | No electric or hybrid version |
Quick Summary
The Audi A1 Sportback (2018-present) is a premium small hatchback that delivers grown-up driving dynamics and impressive practicality. With a five-door-only body, it offers more rear passenger space than rivals like the MINI hatchback and Fiat 500, plus a generous 335-litre boot with split-folding rear seats. The range features sweet, free-revving petrol engines from the 94bhp 1.0-litre 25 TFSI to the 197bhp 2.0-litre 40 TFSI, all delivering composed, stable handling and satisfying performance. Technology is a major strength, with even entry-level models featuring a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 8.8-inch MMI touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Running costs are reasonable, with smaller engines achieving 40-45mpg in moderate use and insurance rated competitively at group 20. The A1 holds its value exceptionally well, losing relatively little to depreciation compared to mainstream rivals. Audi's fixed-price servicing plans (from £299) offer peace of mind, and common tyre sizes keep replacement costs affordable. Whilst pricier than alternatives like the VW Polo and Ford Fiesta, the A1 feels noticeably more premium and offers superior practicality, making it an excellent choice for buyers seeking a refined, understated small car with genuine quality and composure.
Best for: Buyers seeking premium feel and quality in a small car, those prioritising practicality and rear passenger space, and drivers who value composed, grown-up driving dynamics.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking the cheapest option, those wanting an electric or hybrid powertrain, or drivers who prefer a firmer, more engaging handling experience.

The Verdict
You should buy the A1 if: You seek premium feel and quality in a small car, prioritise practicality and rear passenger space, or value composed, grown-up driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, want an electric or hybrid powertrain, or prefer a firmer, more engaging handling experience.
Competitive Position: The Audi A1 (2018-present) is a standout in the premium small car segment, offering superior quality, practicality, and refinement compared to mainstream rivals. Whilst the VW Polo matches it on expert rating and the MINI and Fiat 500 offer comparable user ratings, the A1 delivers the most grown-up driving experience and rear passenger space. It holds its value exceptionally well, rivalling the MINI, and feels noticeably more premium than the Polo or Fiat 500. For buyers willing to pay a premium for quality, practicality, and understated style, the A1 is an excellent choice that justifies its higher price tag.

4.7 Overall rating
(8 reviews)It is a very good car for me as I'm a beginner, stylish and fast, brilliant 1st car
perfect great value, couldnt be more happy, stunning car condition
I loved it! Nice drive, compact, comfortable and stylish and hit all of my needs.
Lovely simple design. Unfortunately no rear parking sensors! Good value for an upmarket car
High quality interior, in my opinion, better than the current model that replaces it. Refined engine and transmission (7 speed steptronic). Be careful which suspension/wheel set up you go for. We traded in another A1 for this example as the other had S Line sports suspension and very low profile tyres, giving a harsh ride. If you prefer comfort over outright handling, opt for the softer suspension and higher profile tyres, makes a world of difference.
