Audi A1 (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Understated good looks | Pricey compared to similar cars with mainstream badges |
| Very practical for a small car | Firm ride when fitted with big alloy wheels |
| Free-revving petrol engines | No electric or hybrid version |
Quick Summary
The Audi A1 (2018-present) is the second-generation of Audi's premium supermini, offering a sophisticated alternative to mainstream rivals. Now exclusively a five-door Sportback, it provides improved practicality and interior space, including a generous 335-litre boot. While its price point is higher than competitors like the VW Polo or Ford Fiesta, it justifies this with excellent build quality, strong residual values, and low running costs from its range of efficient petrol engines.
The A1 delivers a refined driving experience, blending comfortable ride quality with predictable handling, making it suitable for both city driving and motorway journeys. It boasts impressive technology, with even entry-level models featuring 10.3-inch digital dials and an 8.8-inch MMI touchscreen with smartphone integration. Though not as engaging as a MINI for pure driving fun, its superior practicality and understated premium feel make it a sensible and desirable choice in the compact segment.
Best for: Drivers seeking a premium small car with excellent build quality, strong residual values, good practicality, and advanced technology.
Not ideal for: Buyers on a very tight budget, those who prefer a softer ride on all trims, or those looking for an electric/hybrid option.

The Verdict
You should buy the Audi A1 if: You value a premium badge, sophisticated interior, good practicality for a small car, and strong resale values, and you're happy with petrol engines.
Consider alternatives if: You're on a strict budget, prioritise the most engaging driving dynamics (like a MINI), or need an electric/hybrid powertrain.
Competitive Position: The Audi A1 (2018-present) stands out in the premium supermini segment by offering a blend of Audi's renowned quality, advanced technology, and surprising practicality for its size. While its price tag is higher than mainstream rivals, its strong residual values and refined driving experience make it a compelling choice. It carves a niche between the sportier MINI and more conventional options, appealing to those who desire a sophisticated and sensible compact car.

4.5 Overall rating
(27 reviews)perfect great value, couldnt be more happy, stunning car condition
High quality interior, in my opinion, better than the current model that replaces it. Refined engine and transmission (7 speed steptronic). Be careful which suspension/wheel set up you go for. We traded in another A1 for this example as the other had S Line sports suspension and very low profile tyres, giving a harsh ride. If you prefer comfort over outright handling, opt for the softer suspension and higher profile tyres, makes a world of difference.
I really enjoy this car, it’s fast and smooth at the same time, the seats make it a comfortable ride for me. The additional features including heated seats and steering welll, make the ride even more enjoyable. To improve however I would suggest higher seating , and for the car to warm up slightly quicker. The speakers are also very good, which makes up for the negatives lol
Great little car but boot space small no volume controls for audio on steering wheel. Have to pay for navigation to be installed
Very nice car good quality good price nice information .I’m defiantly impressed .
