Audi A3 Mk4 (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Lots of luxury and safety kit	Expensive for a car of this size
Very good to drive	Not as well finished as some rivals
Practical enough for a small family	There's a firm edge to the ride

Quick Summary

The Audi A3 Mk4 (2020-present) is a premium five-door hatchback that maintains Audi's competitive position in the prestige compact car segment. With a 380-litre boot expanding to 1,200 litres with rear seats folded, it offers excellent practicality for a small family. The car features comprehensive standard equipment including a 10.1-inch touchscreen, 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit digital display, satnav, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and advanced safety systems. A mild 2024 facelift added styling refinements and extra technology, keeping the A3 fresh and desirable against rivals like the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class.

The A3 delivers engaging driving dynamics with responsive steering, tight body control, and strong grip, though the ride has a firm edge. Turbocharged petrol engines achieve around 50mpg, whilst diesel options return upwards of 60mpg. Build quality is solid, and the car feels worth its premium price point. Running costs align with rivals, though insurance groupings range from 20 to 29. The A3 remains a very competitive prestige hatchback, balancing style, technology, and practicality with entertaining driving characteristics.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium compact hatchback with luxury kit, engaging handling, and practical space; those wanting the latest technology and safety features in a stylish package.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising maximum interior space, or drivers seeking the softest ride quality in the segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the A3 if: You want a premium compact hatchback with comprehensive luxury kit, engaging handling, and practical space for a small family, plus the latest technology and safety features.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, prioritise maximum interior space, or seek the softest ride quality available in the segment.

Competitive Position: The Audi A3 Mk4 remains a highly competitive prestige hatchback, matching the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class for desirability, style, and practicality. Whilst it costs slightly more than rivals and build quality has marginally declined, the A3 still delivers excellent value through its comprehensive standard equipment, engaging driving dynamics, and refined turbocharged engines. The 2024 facelift keeps it fresh and technologically current. For buyers seeking a premium compact car that balances luxury, practicality, and driving enjoyment, the A3 is an excellent choice, though the Volkswagen Golf offers similar quality at a lower price point.
