Audi A7 (2010-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Handsome, but without attracting too much attention	Gearbox and engine reliability issues
Choice of powerful petrol and diesel engines	Rapid S7 and RS7 get through a lot of petrol
Comfortable and quick long-distance machine	Harsh ride on sports suspension

Quick Summary

The Audi A7 Sportback (2010-2017) is a stylishly understated premium saloon with a hatchback, sitting between the smaller A5 and larger A8. Despite its swooping roof-line, it offers surprising practicality with 535 litres of boot space, expandable to 1,390 litres with folding rear seats, and a power-operated hatchback for flexible access. The interior is classy with excellent fit and finish, whilst rear passengers enjoy comfortable headroom and legroom, provided they're not exceptionally tall. The A7 combines effortless speed with refined cruising, offering impressive four-wheel drive handling and surefooted grip in all weathers.

The A7 is impressively quick in all guises, with a choice of powerful petrol and diesel engines delivering official mpg figures from 34mpg to 60mpg, though real-world figures typically range from 37mpg to 42mpg depending on the engine. Standard equipment levels are commensurate with a top-tier executive saloon, with optional MMI Plus infotainment and sophisticated LED Matrix headlights available post-facelift. However, gearbox and engine reliability issues require careful purchasing, and running costs are relatively high. An independent Audi specialist pre-purchase inspection is strongly recommended, along with consideration of an aftermarket warranty.

Best for: Long-distance cruising, those seeking understated premium styling, drivers wanting powerful engine choices, and buyers comfortable with higher running costs and maintenance expenses.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising maximum driving engagement, or buyers seeking hassle-free reliability without specialist knowledge required.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the A7 if: You prioritise long-distance comfort, appreciate understated premium styling, desire powerful engine options, and are prepared for higher running costs and maintenance expenses.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, seeking maximum driving engagement, or require hassle-free reliability without specialist knowledge required.

Competitive Position: The Audi A7 (2010-2017) is a capable executive saloon offering understated style, impressive performance, and genuine practicality. However, it trails rivals like the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and BMW 6 Series in expert and user ratings, primarily due to gearbox and engine reliability concerns. Whilst the A7 excels as a comfortable long-distance cruiser with sophisticated four-wheel drive handling, potential buyers must weigh its appeal against competitors offering superior reliability records and marginally better value propositions. Careful pre-purchase inspection and aftermarket warranty consideration are essential.
