Audi E-Tron (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Refined and roomy	Not as enjoyable to drive as the Jaguar I-Pace
Superb build quality more than lives up to the price	Tesla Model X has a longer range
Class-leading infotainment system	More expensive than a Mercedes EQC

Quick Summary

The Audi E-Tron (2018-present) is a premium electric SUV that combines luxury, refinement, and practicality. Available with two battery sizes—the 95kWh E-Tron 55 and the 71kWh E-Tron 50—it offers official ranges of 271 and 186 miles respectively. Both variants feature dual electric motors, adaptive air suspension, and Audi's active quattro four-wheel drive. The spacious 605-litre boot and generous passenger room make it an excellent family vehicle, whilst the superbly finished cabin and class-leading infotainment system justify its premium positioning.

Real-world efficiency suggests around 2.0–2.3 miles per kWh, translating to approximately 180–200 miles of range in varied driving. Running costs are reasonable for electricity, with home charging costing less than £20 for a full charge on standard tariffs. However, insurance falls into the highest groups, and tyres are expensive. The E-Tron was renamed the Q8 E-Tron in 2023 with updated batteries and longer ranges. Servicing intervals are every two years and 19,000 miles, with an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty providing peace of mind.

Best for: Buyers seeking a refined, spacious, and luxurious electric SUV with excellent build quality and infotainment, and those prioritising comfort and practicality over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting engaging, sporty handling like the Jaguar I-Pace, those requiring maximum range like the Tesla Model X, or budget-conscious buyers seeking better value than the Mercedes EQC.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the E-Tron if: You prioritise luxury, refinement, and practicality in an electric SUV, value superb build quality and infotainment, and prefer comfort over driving excitement.

Consider alternatives if: You seek engaging, sporty handling, require maximum range, or want better value for money than the E-Tron offers.

Competitive Position: The Audi E-Tron is a compelling premium electric SUV that excels in refinement, interior quality, and practicality. Whilst it doesn't match the Jaguar I-Pace for driving engagement or the Tesla Model X for range and versatility, the E-Tron's sumptuous cabin, class-leading infotainment, and spacious design make it an excellent choice for those prioritising comfort and luxury. However, the Mercedes EQC offers comparable features with better value, and the Jaguar I-Pace delivers more dynamic handling for those seeking a sportier drive.
