Audi Q7 (2015-present) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Serene ride on air suspension Strong resale values make used examples expensive
Beautifully made and practical interior Third row not as roomy as a Land Rover Discovery's
SQ7 is very fast indeed Styling looks a bit awkward

Quick Summary

The Audi Q7 (2015-present) is an excellent luxury seven-seat SUV that improved upon its predecessor in virtually every way. Weighing around 240kg less than the first generation, the second-generation Q7 offers improved ride and handling whilst maintaining surprising fuel economy for a car of its size. The interior is superbly made with a standard of finish that rivals premium competitors, featuring lots of space in the first two rows of seats. Even with the rearmost seats deployed, the Q7 provides a generous 780-litre boot, extending to a cavernous 1,908 litres when folded down. All three middle-row seats slide independently and recline for comfort or maximum boot capacity.

The Q7 is powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine available in 218bhp and 272bhp versions, both delivering impressive performance and pulling power for towing. All models feature quattro four-wheel drive and Audi Drive Select, allowing drivers to choose between efficiency, dynamic, comfort, and individual modes. The 2019 facelift introduced a fully digital cockpit with configurable Virtual Cockpit display and mild-hybrid technology for improved economy. Running costs are reasonable for a car of this calibre, with the 218bhp diesel achieving around 52.3mpg and the 268bhp version returning 47.9mpg on the combined cycle, though real-world figures typically fall in the mid-30s. The SQ7 offers thrilling performance but with significantly higher fuel consumption and running costs.

Best for: Buyers seeking a spacious, luxurious seven-seat SUV with excellent build quality, those prioritising a serene ride and practical interior, and families needing versatile seating and boot space.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking the roomiest third row (Land Rover Discovery offers more space), or drivers who dislike the car's styling.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Q7 if: You're seeking a spacious, luxurious seven-seat SUV with excellent build quality, prioritising a serene ride and practical interior, or needing versatile seating and boot space for family use.

Consider alternatives if: You require the roomiest third row (Land Rover Discovery), prefer Swedish styling (Volvo XC90), or are budget-conscious about purchase and running costs.

Competitive Position: The Audi Q7 (2015-present) is a standout in the luxury SUV segment, matching the BMW X5 for expert appeal whilst offering superior user satisfaction compared to most rivals. Its beautifully crafted interior, practical seven-seat layout, and serene ride quality on air suspension set it apart. Whilst strong resale values make used examples expensive, the Q7 justifies its premium with exceptional build quality and reasonable running costs for its class. The SQ7 variant provides thrilling performance for those willing to accept higher fuel consumption. Against the Land Rover Discovery, the Q7 offers more refinement; against the Volvo XC90, it provides a more dynamic drive; and against the BMW X5, it delivers comparable excellence with a more distinctive interior design.

Back seats fold back completely in the 5 seat version, unlike most similar cars like Lexus, Mercedes, Porsche. More reliable than Range Rover.
