Excellent fun car to drive, reliable if maintained regularly and looked after. Well built car, mines the 2.0lt TFSI model petrol engine and have found the car very good on economy but it can differ depending on the way you drive it. Lovely performance and a fast car. I prefer the automatic DSG gearbox, with the additional paddle change on the steering wheel. Would recommend this model. There is also a surprising amount of boot space for a small sports car. The only criticism is the rear seats are completely pointless due to zero legroom, so the car really is a two seater like the soft top roadster version

Only had it for a month but its fun to drive and looks great. Still learning all the on board features Main criticism is the display in the middle of the steering wheel which is very distracting and non user friendly with regard to preset features. The visual display and preset buttons on my VW scirrocco was better.

Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A style icon that still looks good today | Lacks the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster |
| Strong performance and soundtrack from 3.2-litre V6 | Tired examples can cost a lot to maintain |
| Sensible servicing costs if you use an independent specialist | 1.8-litre turbo engine sounds bland |
Quick Summary
The Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005), internally designated the Type 8N, is an increasingly sought-after sports coupe combining decent performance and attention-grabbing design with everyday practicality. Unveiled in 1998 and arriving on the UK market shortly after, it marked Audi's return to the sports car sector. The TT faced competition from the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z3, Mercedes-Benz SLK, and later arrivals such as the Nissan 350Z and Mazda RX-8. An array of variants were offered, including the TT 180 and TT 225, featuring 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engines producing 178bhp and 222bhp respectively, with Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system standard on many variants.
The TT had the pace to match its sporty looks, with the 225 version accelerating from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds. Early cars were responsive and rewarding to drive, though a recall-induced modification numbed driver appeal, resulting in a softer experience less exciting than rival offerings. A muscular 3.2-litre V6 option resolved aural issues but gave the car a more cruiser-like nature. The coupe features a 305-litre boot and roomy front seats, though rear seats are cramped. Running costs are reasonable, with the 222bhp 1.8T averaging 30.1mpg combined, though VED can be expensive depending on model year and specification. Many examples have finished depreciating, with some appreciating in value. Servicing costs are sensible when using independent specialists, though tired examples can become expensive money pits.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, iconic sports coupe with decent performance and practicality, those valuing design and everyday usability, and enthusiasts willing to invest in proper maintenance.
Not ideal for: Those seeking the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster, the driving engagement of a Mazda MX-5, or the raw power of a Nissan 350Z, or buyers unwilling to commit to proper servicing and maintenance.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audi TT Coupe | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 36.4% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the TT if: You're seeking a stylish, iconic sports coupe with decent performance and practicality, value design and everyday usability, or are an enthusiast willing to invest in proper maintenance.
Consider alternatives if: You want the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster, the driving engagement of a Mazda MX-5, the raw power of a Nissan 350Z, or are unwilling to commit to proper servicing.
Competitive Position: The Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005) is a beautiful piece of design, both inside and out, and increasingly sought-after as values stabilise. It offers a compelling package of style, performance, and practicality at an affordable price point. Whilst it may lack the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster, the driving fun of a Mazda MX-5, or the raw visceral experience of a Nissan 350Z, a good example should prove satisfying to drive and a delight to live with. The key is to buy the best you can afford, service it properly, and avoid tired examples that can quickly become expensive money pits.
