Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A style icon that still looks good today | Lacks the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster |
| Strong performance and soundtrack from 3.2-litre V6 | Tired examples can cost a lot to maintain |
| Sensible servicing costs if you use an independent specialist | 1.8-litre turbo engine sounds bland |
Quick Summary
The Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005), internally designated the Type 8N, is an increasingly sought-after sports coupe that combines decent performance and attention-grabbing design with everyday practicality. Unveiled in production form in September 1998, it marked Audi's return to the sports car sector and faced competition from the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z3, Mercedes-Benz SLK, and later arrivals such as the Nissan 350Z and Mazda RX-8. The TT's interior design is as attractive as its exterior, featuring stylish touches and sumptuous-feeling materials, whilst the 305-litre boot makes it practical for weekend trips.
An array of variants were offered, including the TT 180 and TT 225, featuring 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engines producing 178bhp and 222bhp respectively. Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system was standard on many variants, providing an edge in poor conditions. The 225 version accelerated from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds, though early responsiveness was later numbed by safety-related modifications. A muscular 3.2-litre V6 option resolved aural issues with the turbo engine. Running costs are reasonable, with the 225 quattro averaging 30.1mpg combined, though VED can be expensive depending on model year and tax band. Many examples have finished depreciating, with some appreciating in value. Servicing costs are sensible when using independent specialists, though aged cars may require significant maintenance work.
Best for: Buyers seeking an iconic design, strong performance from the V6 variant, and a practical sports car with reasonable running costs when properly maintained.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster, the driving engagement of a Mazda MX-5, or seeking to avoid potentially expensive maintenance on tired examples.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audi TT Coupe | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.0% | 4.1/5 |
| Mazda MX-5 | 5/5 | 4.7/5 | 29.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Nissan 350Z | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 27.0% | 4.3/5 |
| Porsche Boxster | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 2.4% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the TT if: You're seeking an iconic design, strong performance from the V6 variant, and a practical sports car with reasonable running costs when properly maintained.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster, the driving engagement of a Mazda MX-5, or wish to avoid potentially expensive maintenance on tired examples.
Competitive Position: The Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005) is a beautiful piece of design, both inside and out, and many are starting to warm to the way it drives, especially considering how affordable many examples are. Whilst it lacks the visceral experience of the Nissan 350Z and the cornering prowess of the Porsche Boxster, and offers less driving fun than the Mazda MX-5 out of the box, there is much you can do with a TT to make it more compelling. A good example should prove satisfying to drive and a delight to live with. However, steer clear of tired cars, as they can quickly become expensive money pits. Buy the best you can afford, service it properly, and enjoy it.

(8 reviews)Customers say
The Audi TT Coupe is celebrated for its sporty handling and exciting driving experience, earning praise from owners for its impressive power and quick acceleration. Many appreciate its stylish design and fun performance, but some drivers mention concerns regarding maintenance costs and the car's limited rear seat space. Overall, the TT Coupe is seen as a well-built vehicle that offers great enjoyment on the road, but some feel it could be more technologically advanced for its price.

What people say
what can i say great cheap car with lots of maintence costs esp if you want to make it look different or your a petrol head my automatic gearbox is great lots of power for a 08 and very quick off the mark to 60 mph overall lovely cars audi tfsi 2.0 in white auto red leather mmm
Excellent fun car to drive, reliable if maintained regularly and looked after. Well built car, mines the 2.0lt TFSI model petrol engine and have found the car very good on economy but it can differ depending on the way you drive it. Lovely performance and a fast car. I prefer the automatic DSG gearbox, with the additional paddle change on the steering wheel. Would recommend this model. There is also a surprising amount of boot space for a small sports car. The only criticism is the rear seats are completely pointless due to zero legroom, so the car really is a two seater like the soft top roadster version
Only had it for a month but its fun to drive and looks great. Still learning all the on board features Main criticism is the display in the middle of the steering wheel which is very distracting and non user friendly with regard to preset features. The visual display and preset buttons on my VW scirrocco was better.
excellent and very good value too im still searching for something very special an Audi TT or a V?W Beetle around 6 yrs old model.
Features of TT fair, handles superb fun to drive, after having various coupes, bmw,Mercedes Mazda,to me it would TT + BMW
