Excellent fun car to drive, reliable if maintained regularly and looked after. Well built car, mines the 2.0lt TFSI model petrol engine and have found the car very good on economy but it can differ depending on the way you drive it. Lovely performance and a fast car. I prefer the automatic DSG gearbox, with the additional paddle change on the steering wheel. Would recommend this model. There is also a surprising amount of boot space for a small sports car. The only criticism is the rear seats are completely pointless due to zero legroom, so the car really is a two seater like the soft top roadster version

Only had it for a month but its fun to drive and looks great. Still learning all the on board features Main criticism is the display in the middle of the steering wheel which is very distracting and non user friendly with regard to preset features. The visual display and preset buttons on my VW scirrocco was better.

Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A style icon that still looks good today | Lacks the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster |
| Strong performance and soundtrack from 3.2-litre V6 | Tired examples can cost a lot to maintain |
| Sensible servicing costs if you use an independent specialist | 1.8-litre turbo engine sounds bland |
Quick Summary
The Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005), internally dubbed the Type 8N, is an increasingly sought-after sports coupe that combines decent performance and attention-grabbing design with everyday practicality. Unveiled in production form in September 1998, it marked Audi's return to the sports car sector and faced off against the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z3, and Mercedes-Benz SLK. The TT featured an array of variants, including the TT 180 and TT 225, with 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engines producing 178bhp and 222bhp respectively. Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system was standard on many variants, providing an edge in poor conditions. The 225 version could accelerate from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds, whilst a muscular 3.2-litre V6 option resolved aural issues with the turbo engine.
The TT's interior design is as attractive as its exterior, featuring stylish touches and sumptuous materials. The coupe offers a 305-litre boot, making it better for weekend trips than most sports car rivals. Running costs are reasonable, with the 222bhp 1.8T claiming a combined 30.1mpg and up to 39.8mpg on extra-urban cycles. However, VED can be expensive, ranging from £270 to £565 annually depending on model year and specification. Most TTs have finished depreciating, with some low-mileage examples appreciating. Servicing costs are sensible when using independent specialists, though tired examples can become expensive money pits. Buy the best you can afford, service it properly, and enjoy it.
Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish, practical sports coupe with decent performance, those appreciating iconic design, and buyers wanting quattro all-wheel-drive capability in a manageable package.
Not ideal for: Enthusiasts prioritising the handling of a Porsche Boxster, those seeking maximum driving engagement, or buyers wanting a more visceral experience like the Nissan 350Z.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audi TT Coupe | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 29.2% | 4.1/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the TT if: You're seeking a stylish, practical sports coupe with decent performance, appreciate iconic design, or want quattro all-wheel-drive capability in a manageable package.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the handling of a Porsche Boxster, seek maximum driving engagement, or want a more visceral experience like the Nissan 350Z.
Competitive Position: The Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005) is a beautiful piece of design, both inside and out, and many are starting to warm to the way it drives—especially considering how affordable many examples are and what they offer in terms of an overall package. Whilst it lacks the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster and the driving fun of a Mazda MX-5, the TT offers a compelling blend of style, practicality, and performance. Those seeking a brawnier, more visceral experience may prefer the Nissan 350Z. However, there is much you can do with a TT to make it a more compelling and involving experience. A good example should prove satisfying to drive and a delight to live with, provided you buy the best you can afford and avoid tired examples that can become expensive money pits.
