Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A style icon that still looks good today | Lacks the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster |
| Strong performance and soundtrack from 3.2-litre V6 | Tired examples can cost a lot to maintain |
| Sensible servicing costs if you use an independent specialist | 1.8-litre turbo engine sounds bland |
Quick Summary
The first-generation Audi TT Coupe (1999-2005), internally known as the Type 8N, is a stylish and sought-after sports coupe renowned for its attention-grabbing design and decent performance. It offers a surprising degree of everyday practicality, with roomy front seats and a 305-litre boot, larger than many rivals. While the rear seats in the coupe are very cramped and best considered for extra storage, the interior design mirrors the exterior's attractiveness with quality materials. Engine options include 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinders (178bhp and 222bhp), with quattro all-wheel-drive standard on many variants, and a later 3.2-litre V6.
While early models were responsive, a recall numbed some of the car's initial driver appeal, making it less involving than some rivals, especially with the bland-sounding 1.8T engine. Running costs can vary; a 1.8T 222bhp model averages around 30.1 mpg, but VED can be expensive for some variants (£270 to £565 annually). Depreciation is largely done, with some examples appreciating. Servicing costs are reasonable with independent specialists, though timing belt changes are crucial (around £500), and quattro/DSG models require specific fluid changes. Neglected cars can incur significant repair costs due to age, so careful selection is advised.
Best for: Drivers looking for a stylish and increasingly appreciating classic sports coupe, buyers seeking decent performance with everyday practicality, and those who appreciate iconic design.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising the ultimate thrill factor and driver involvement (like a Porsche Boxster or Mazda MX-5), or those unwilling to commit to proper maintenance for an older car.

The Verdict
You should buy the TT if: You're looking for a stylish and increasingly appreciating classic sports coupe, seeking decent performance with everyday practicality, or appreciate iconic design.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the ultimate thrill factor and driver involvement, or are unwilling to commit to proper maintenance for an older car.
Competitive Position: The first-generation Audi TT Coupe is a compelling choice in the used sports coupe market. While it may not offer the raw driver engagement of a Porsche Boxster or Mazda MX-5, its iconic design, surprising practicality, and potential for appreciation make it a strong contender. Its decent performance, especially with quattro all-wheel-drive, combined with manageable running costs (if properly maintained), positions it as an attractive option for those seeking a stylish and usable classic that stands out from the crowd.

(20 reviews)what can i say great cheap car with lots of maintence costs esp if you want to make it look different or your a petrol head my automatic gearbox is great lots of power for a 08 and very quick off the mark to 60 mph overall lovely cars audi tfsi 2.0 in white auto red leather mmm
Excellent fun car to drive, reliable if maintained regularly and looked after. Well built car, mines the 2.0lt TFSI model petrol engine and have found the car very good on economy but it can differ depending on the way you drive it. Lovely performance and a fast car. I prefer the automatic DSG gearbox, with the additional paddle change on the steering wheel. Would recommend this model. There is also a surprising amount of boot space for a small sports car. The only criticism is the rear seats are completely pointless due to zero legroom, so the car really is a two seater like the soft top roadster version
Only had it for a month but its fun to drive and looks great. Still learning all the on board features Main criticism is the display in the middle of the steering wheel which is very distracting and non user friendly with regard to preset features. The visual display and preset buttons on my VW scirrocco was better.
excellent and very good value too im still searching for something very special an Audi TT or a V?W Beetle around 6 yrs old model.
Features of TT fair, handles superb fun to drive, after having various coupes, bmw,Mercedes Mazda,to me it would TT + BMW
