Audi TT Coupe Mk1 (1999-2005) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| A style icon that still looks good today | Lacks the thrill factor of a Porsche Boxster |
| Strong performance and soundtrack from 3.2-litre V6 | Tired examples can cost a lot to maintain |
| Sensible servicing costs if you use an independent specialist | 1.8-litre turbo engine sounds bland |
Quick Summary
The Audi TT Coupe Mk1 (1999-2005) is a stylish and increasingly sought-after sports coupe, renowned for its distinctive design and decent performance. Launched in 1998, it marked Audi's return to the sports car segment, offering a compelling blend of aesthetics and everyday usability. The interior mirrors the exterior's attractive design, with roomy front seats and a surprisingly practical 305-litre boot, making it suitable for weekend trips despite its small rear seats.
Available with 1.8-litre turbocharged engines (178bhp or 222bhp) and optional quattro all-wheel-drive, the TT offered brisk acceleration. While early cars were engaging, a recall led to modifications that slightly dulled the driving experience, making it less thrilling than some rivals, though a 3.2-litre V6 later added a more sonorous option. Running costs are reasonable for a sports car of its era, with some well-maintained examples even appreciating in value. However, maintenance of neglected cars can be costly, highlighting the importance of buying a well-cared-for example. Standard equipment included climate control, leather upholstery, and alloy wheels.
Best for: Drivers who prioritise iconic design, a balance of performance and practicality, manageable running costs (if well-maintained), and potential for appreciation.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the ultimate thrill and driver engagement, a brawnier, more visceral experience, or those unwilling to invest in a meticulously maintained example.

The Verdict
You should buy the TT if: You prioritise iconic design, a balance of performance and practicality, manageable running costs (if well-maintained), and potential for appreciation.
Consider alternatives if: You seek the ultimate thrill and driver engagement, a brawnier, more visceral experience, or are unwilling to invest in a meticulously maintained example.
Competitive Position: The Audi TT Coupe Mk1 (1999-2005) stands out as a design icon with a blend of sports car appeal and everyday practicality. While it may not offer the raw driving thrill of a Porsche Boxster or Mazda MX-5, or the brute force of a Nissan 350Z, its distinctive styling, available quattro system, and potential for appreciation make it a unique and increasingly sought-after choice. For buyers willing to find a well-maintained example, it offers a satisfying ownership experience and good value in the used market.

(20 reviews)what can i say great cheap car with lots of maintence costs esp if you want to make it look different or your a petrol head my automatic gearbox is great lots of power for a 08 and very quick off the mark to 60 mph overall lovely cars audi tfsi 2.0 in white auto red leather mmm
Excellent fun car to drive, reliable if maintained regularly and looked after. Well built car, mines the 2.0lt TFSI model petrol engine and have found the car very good on economy but it can differ depending on the way you drive it. Lovely performance and a fast car. I prefer the automatic DSG gearbox, with the additional paddle change on the steering wheel. Would recommend this model. There is also a surprising amount of boot space for a small sports car. The only criticism is the rear seats are completely pointless due to zero legroom, so the car really is a two seater like the soft top roadster version
Only had it for a month but its fun to drive and looks great. Still learning all the on board features Main criticism is the display in the middle of the steering wheel which is very distracting and non user friendly with regard to preset features. The visual display and preset buttons on my VW scirrocco was better.
excellent and very good value too im still searching for something very special an Audi TT or a V?W Beetle around 6 yrs old model.
Features of TT fair, handles superb fun to drive, after having various coupes, bmw,Mercedes Mazda,to me it would TT + BMW
