BMW 7 Series (2015-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Sharper to drive than most luxury cars	Doesn't ride with the serenity of a Mercedes S-Class
Slick iDrive infotainment system	Plain looks and an ungainly grille
Huge rear-seat space in long-wheelbase versions	Complex technology could land used 7 Series owners with a big bill

Quick Summary

The BMW 7 Series (2015-2022), known as the G11 generation, is a luxury limousine that combines lavish interiors with extensive equipment. Whilst its vast grille and plain styling lack the visual drama of rivals, the 7 Series delivers a composed driving experience with impressive handling for its size. The air suspension effectively dampens road imperfections, and the car never feels as heavy or unwieldy as its dimensions suggest. With a choice of three petrol engines, two diesel options, and a plug-in hybrid, most buyers opt for the hushed and effortless 740i petrol or 730d diesel, both providing ample performance for refined progress.

The long-wheelbase L version offers an additional 14cm between the wheels, with that extra space dedicated to rear legroom, plus a glass sunroof and roller blind for the rear windscreen. The 7 Series is well-equipped across all three core versions: the base model, the more luxurious Exclusive, and the sporty M Sport. Running costs are reasonable for a car of this class, with the 730d achieving around 45mpg in real-world driving. However, petrol variants are considerably thirstier, with the 740i managing approximately 30mpg and the V12-powered M760Li struggling to exceed 20mpg. Practicality is assured with 515 litres of boot space and generous interior dimensions throughout.

Best for: Buyers seeking a refined, spacious luxury saloon with sharp handling, those valuing the long-wheelbase version for enhanced rear comfort, and drivers prioritising the slick iDrive infotainment system.

Not ideal for: Those seeking the serene ride quality of a Mercedes S-Class, buyers concerned about complex technology repair costs, or those prioritising striking visual design over understated elegance.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 7 Series if: You value sharp handling in a luxury saloon, appreciate the slick iDrive infotainment system, or seek the enhanced rear comfort of the long-wheelbase version.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the serene ride quality of a Mercedes S-Class, are concerned about complex technology repair costs, or desire striking visual design over understated elegance.

Competitive Position: The BMW 7 Series (2015-2022) is a capable luxury saloon that delivers composed driving dynamics and impressive handling for its class. However, it falls slightly short of its competitors in overall appeal. Whilst it offers a slick infotainment system and spacious long-wheelbase options, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class provides superior ride serenity and user satisfaction, whilst the Audi A8 and Range Rover offer better value propositions. The 7 Series remains a solid choice for those prioritising driving engagement and technology, but rivals edge ahead on comfort, prestige, and value for money.
