BMW X6 (2015-2018) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Entertaining to drive for a car of this size	Not as practical as the equivalent X5
Whichever engine you choose, the X6 is fast	High running costs, especially the petrol models
Most used examples are high spec, with lots of optional extras fitted	Beware of random electrical glitches

Quick Summary

The BMW X6 (2015-2018) is a divisive Sports Activity Coupe that combines SUV practicality with coupe styling. Based on the third-generation X5 platform, it features a sloping roofline that reduces boot space compared to a traditional SUV, but still provides sufficient room for most luggage needs. The 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats add flexibility, and rear headroom is adequate for all but the tallest passengers. With excellent front and side visibility, supportive sports seats, and an SUV-high driving position, the X6 offers a commanding view of the road, though rear visibility is compromised by thick pillars.

The X6 impresses dynamically with a choice of turbocharged diesel engines (254bhp, 309bhp, and 376bhp) and petrol options, including a 444bhp twin-turbo V8 and the ferocious 568bhp X6 M. All engines deliver impressive mid-range performance and are paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Despite its size and weight, the X6 rides surprisingly well thanks to adaptive dampers and, on higher models, full adaptive suspension. The cabin is luxuriously appointed with quality materials, intuitive iDrive controls, and comprehensive driver assistance systems. However, running costs are substantial, particularly for petrol models, with fuel economy ranging from around 33mpg for the xDrive30d to the teens for performance variants. Insurance groups span 41-50, and specialist tyres on the X6 M cost up to £375 per rear wheel.

Best for: Drivers seeking a distinctive, high-performance luxury SUV that handles like a sports saloon, those wanting to stand out from conventional SUVs, and buyers prioritising style and performance over maximum practicality.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those requiring maximum boot space, drivers concerned about fuel economy, or those seeking a practical family hauler comparable to the X5.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the X6 if: You desire a distinctive, high-performance luxury SUV that handles like a sports saloon, want to stand out from conventional SUVs, and prioritise style and performance over maximum practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum boot space, are concerned about fuel economy and running costs, need a practical family hauler, or are budget-conscious.

Competitive Position: The BMW X6 (2015-2018) occupies a unique niche in the luxury SUV market as a style-focused alternative to traditional SUVs. Whilst the BMW X5 offers greater practicality and user satisfaction, and rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and Porsche Cayenne provide comparable performance and ratings, the X6 stands apart through its distinctive coupe styling and engaging driving dynamics. It's the choice for those willing to sacrifice some practicality for a vehicle that truly stands out. High running costs and potential electrical issues are considerations, but for the right buyer, the X6 delivers an uncompromising blend of luxury, performance, and individuality.
