BMW X7 (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Luxurious and spacious cabin	Cumbersome size is a burden on narrow country roads
Rapid performance, whichever engine you choose	Very expensive to run
Optional captain's chairs are wonderfully comfortable	The Audi Q7 and BMW X5 are better value, and roomy enough for most needs

Quick Summary

The BMW X7 (2018-present) is BMW's largest and most luxurious SUV, offering three rows of seats with genuine space for seven adults. The cabin is beautifully appointed with premium materials, and the optional captain's chairs in the middle row provide exceptional comfort. With an extensive 2023 facelift, the X7 now rivals the new Range Rover for prestige and refinement. The enormous kidney grilles and imposing presence make a bold statement, though styling remains divisive.

Performance is impressive across the range, from the sensible xDrive 40d diesel achieving 34.9-36.2mpg to the thrilling M50i with 530bhp and a 4.7-second 0-62mph time. Air suspension delivers a comfortable ride on motorways and A-roads, though the X7's considerable bulk makes it challenging on narrow country lanes. Running costs are substantial, with insurance in group 50 of 50 and premium fuel consumption. The xDrive 40d represents the most sensible choice, balancing performance with efficiency.

Best for: Buyers seeking a luxurious seven-seat SUV with impressive performance, those prioritising comfort and space over economy, and drivers who primarily use motorways and A-roads.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those concerned about running costs, drivers navigating narrow country roads regularly, or those seeking better value in the luxury SUV segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the X7 if: You seek a luxurious seven-seat SUV with impressive performance, prioritise comfort and space, and primarily use motorways and A-roads.

Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, concerned about running costs, regularly navigate narrow country roads, or seek better value in the luxury SUV segment.

Competitive Position: The BMW X7 is a formidable luxury SUV, but faces stiff competition from the Volvo XC90, Mercedes-Benz GLS, and Range Rover, all of which achieve higher overall CarGurus ratings (4.4/5 versus 3.8/5). Whilst the X7 delivers exceptional space, performance, and luxury, rivals offer better value propositions and user satisfaction. The Volvo XC90 and Mercedes GLS both score higher with users, whilst the Range Rover offers superior value deals. For most buyers, the smaller BMW X5 or Audi Q7 provide more practical alternatives with lower running costs and better value for money.
