Excellent car, absolutely beautiful. Good value for money. Electronic roof. Nothing is missing as far as I am concerned. It’s one hell of a vehicle. I would compare the style like an Aston Martin /Porsche

I have loved driving this car so far. It looks great, so smooth and quiet engine. Not overloaded with gadgets so easy to familiarise yourself and get driving with confidence.

BMW Z4 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More sporting than earlier Z4 generations, but still easy to live with | Not as engaging as a Porsche Boxster |
| Refined engines and a comfortable ride make long drives a pleasure | Relatively high running costs of M40i |
| Decent boot space for a sports car | No fixed-roof version (unless you count the Toyota Supra) |
Quick Summary
The BMW Z4 (2019-present) is a rear-wheel drive, two-seat roadster with a fabric hood that represents a significant step forward in sportiness compared to its predecessors. Developed jointly with Toyota (sharing its platform with the GR Supra), this third-generation Z4 features a shorter wheelbase and wider tracks than the previous model, making it intrinsically more agile and responsive. With a useful 281-litre boot, high-grade materials, intuitive iDrive infotainment, and comprehensive standard equipment, the Z4 proves surprisingly practical for a dedicated sports car whilst maintaining a low-slung driving position and purposeful cabin design.
The Z4 offers a range of refined four- and six-cylinder petrol engines, with the entry-level sDrive20i achieving near 40mpg claimed economy and the M40i returning 33mpg. Insurance groups range from 30 to 38, with road tax varying from £150 to £475 annually depending on the model. Whilst the Z4 doesn't quite match the Porsche Boxster for steering precision and chassis balance, it closes the gap considerably and delivers a more comfortable, refined everyday experience. For drivers seeking a capable, well-equipped roadster that balances sporting credentials with usability, the Z4 is an excellent proposition.
Best for: Drivers wanting a refined, sporty roadster with practical everyday usability, those seeking a more accessible alternative to the Porsche Boxster, and buyers who value comfort and equipment alongside performance.
Not ideal for: Purists demanding the most engaging driving experience, those requiring a fixed-roof option, or budget-conscious buyers concerned about M40i running costs.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW Z4 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 24.5% | 4.1/5 |
| Porsche 718 Boxster | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 30.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz SLC | 2/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.8% | 3.8/5 |
| Audi TT Roadster | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 29.2% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Z4 if: You want a refined, sporty roadster with practical everyday usability, seek a more accessible alternative to the Porsche Boxster, or value comfort and equipment alongside performance.
Consider alternatives if: You demand the most engaging driving experience, require a fixed-roof option, or are concerned about M40i running costs.
Competitive Position: The BMW Z4 (2019-present) is a strong contender in the premium roadster segment, offering a compelling balance of sportiness, refinement, and practicality. Whilst the Porsche 718 Boxster remains the ultimate driving experience and the Audi TT Roadster provides an alternative, the Z4 closes the gap to Porsche considerably with its improved agility and shorter wheelbase. It outperforms the Mercedes-Benz SLC in expert ratings and delivers a more engaging drive. For buyers seeking a capable, well-equipped roadster that doesn't compromise on everyday usability or comfort, the Z4 represents excellent value in the premium sports car market.
