BMW Z4 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More sporting than earlier Z4 generations, but still easy to live with | Not as engaging as a Porsche Boxster |
| Refined engines and a comfortable ride make long drives a pleasure | Relatively high running costs of M40i |
| Decent boot space for a sports car | No fixed-roof version (unless you count the Toyota Supra) |
Quick Summary
The BMW Z4 (2019-present) is the third generation of BMW’s two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster, featuring a fabric hood. Building on a heritage stretching back over 30 years, this model shares its platform with the Toyota GR Supra, marking a significant collaboration. It offers a low-slung driving position, high-grade materials, and a clear iDrive infotainment system, making it feel like a premium product.
While not quite matching the Porsche Boxster for ultimate driving engagement, the Z4 delivers a comfortable ride and improved agility compared to its predecessor, making it highly usable day-to-day. It boasts a respectable 281-litre boot for a sports car and comes well-equipped across its Sport, M Sport, and M Performance trims. Running costs are manageable for a performance car, with the entry-level sDrive20i achieving around 35mpg in real-world driving, and various servicing plans available.
Best for: Drivers seeking a premium, comfortable, and practical two-seat roadster for everyday use, who appreciate good equipment levels and a refined driving experience, and value a strong brand.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising the absolute sharpest handling or most engaging driving dynamics (e.g., over a Porsche Boxster), or those needing more than two seats.

The Verdict
You should buy the Z4 if: You're looking for a premium, comfortable, and practical two-seat roadster for everyday use, appreciate good equipment and a refined driving experience, and aren't solely chasing the most extreme driving dynamics.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the absolute sharpest handling and most engaging driving experience (like a Porsche Boxster), or require more than two seats.
Competitive Position: The latest BMW Z4 is a strong contender in the premium two-seat roadster segment. It offers a compelling blend of comfort, refinement, practicality, and an engaging-enough driving experience that closes the gap to rivals like the Porsche Boxster. While it may not be the ultimate driver's car in its class, its everyday usability, premium feel, and strong feature set make it an attractive option for those seeking a stylish and capable open-top sports car.

4.7 Overall rating
(17 reviews)Lovely shape and reliable unique car!!! I drove this car in the late 90s and since I love the style and how smoothly i use to drive the Z3.
Excellent car, absolutely beautiful. Good value for money. Electronic roof. Nothing is missing as far as I am concerned. It’s one hell of a vehicle. I would compare the style like an Aston Martin /Porsche
I have loved driving this car so far. It looks great, so smooth and quiet engine. Not overloaded with gadgets so easy to familiarise yourself and get driving with confidence.
I like the Z4 automatic 2.5 litre model. The mileage is good and the price reasonable.
Nice looks. And features. Too many previous owners. Compared to Mercedes convertible it’s overpriced.
