BMW Z4 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More sporting than earlier Z4 generations, but still easy to live with | Not as engaging as a Porsche Boxster |
| Refined engines and a comfortable ride make long drives a pleasure | Relatively high running costs of M40i |
| Decent boot space for a sports car | No fixed-roof version (unless you count the Toyota Supra) |
Quick Summary
The BMW Z4 (2019-present), known as the G29 generation, is a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster with a fabric hood, continuing a lineage stretching back over 30 years. This latest model shares its platform with the Toyota GR Supra, marking a significant collaboration. It offers a low-slung driving position, high-grade materials, and a practical 281-litre boot, which is decent for a two-seater sports car, making it surprisingly usable day-to-day.
The current Z4 features a shorter wheelbase and wider tracks than its predecessor, resulting in a more agile and responsive driving experience, though it still doesn't quite match the Porsche Boxster for ultimate precision. It boasts refined engines, a comfortable ride, and good wind noise suppression. Running costs are reasonable for a performance car, with the sDrive20i achieving around 35mpg in real-world driving. Standard equipment includes LED headlights, 18-inch alloys, and Apple CarPlay, with M Sport and M Performance variants adding further enhancements.
Best for: Drivers seeking a sporty, comfortable, and refined two-seat roadster for everyday use; those who appreciate good build quality and technology; buyers who value a decent boot for a sports car.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the absolute sharpest and most engaging driving experience (like a Porsche Boxster); those who need more than two seats or a fixed-roof option.

| BMW Z4 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.9% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Z4 if: You're looking for a sporty, comfortable, and refined two-seat roadster for everyday use; you appreciate good build quality and technology; you value a decent boot for a sports car.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the absolute sharpest and most engaging driving experience (like a Porsche Boxster); you need more than two seats or a fixed-roof option.
Competitive Position: The BMW Z4 (2019-present) is a strong contender in the two-seat roadster segment, offering a compelling blend of improved driving dynamics, comfort, and everyday usability. While it has significantly closed the gap on rivals like the Porsche Boxster in terms of sportiness, it doesn't quite surpass it for ultimate driver engagement. Its refined engines, quality interior, and decent practicality for a sports car make it an attractive option for those seeking a stylish and enjoyable open-top experience without sacrificing too much daily comfort.

4.7 Overall rating
(17 reviews)Lovely shape and reliable unique car!!! I drove this car in the late 90s and since I love the style and how smoothly i use to drive the Z3.
Excellent car, absolutely beautiful. Good value for money. Electronic roof. Nothing is missing as far as I am concerned. It’s one hell of a vehicle. I would compare the style like an Aston Martin /Porsche
I have loved driving this car so far. It looks great, so smooth and quiet engine. Not overloaded with gadgets so easy to familiarise yourself and get driving with confidence.
I like the Z4 automatic 2.5 litre model. The mileage is good and the price reasonable.
Nice looks. And features. Too many previous owners. Compared to Mercedes convertible it’s overpriced.
