BMW Z4 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More sporting than earlier Z4 generations, but still easy to live with | Not as engaging as a Porsche Boxster |
| Refined engines and a comfortable ride make long drives a pleasure | Relatively high running costs of M40i |
| Decent boot space for a sports car | No fixed-roof version (unless you count the Toyota Supra) |
Quick Summary
The BMW Z4 (2019-present) is the third generation of BMW's two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster, featuring a fabric hood. Developed on the same platform as the Toyota GR Supra, it offers a sportier driving experience than its predecessors with wider tracks and a shorter wheelbase, enhancing agility. Inside, it boasts high-grade materials, good build quality, a low-slung driving position, and a user-friendly iDrive infotainment system. Practicality is surprisingly good for a sports car, with a useful 281-litre boot.
While it comes close, the Z4 doesn't quite match the Porsche Boxster for ultimate steering precision or handling, but it provides a comfortable ride and good wind noise suppression, making it an amenable everyday proposition. Engine options range from the economical sDrive20i (around 35mpg real-world) to the powerful M40i (around 33mpg). Available in Sport, M Sport, and M Performance trims, it offers generous standard equipment including LED headlights, 18-inch alloys, and Apple CarPlay.
Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish, refined two-seat roadster for everyday use, those who appreciate a comfortable ride in a sports car, and buyers looking for good standard equipment and infotainment.
Not ideal for: Enthusiastic drivers prioritising the most engaging handling (like a Porsche Boxster), or those needing more than two seats.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW Z4 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 29.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Porsche 718 Boxster | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 42.5% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi TT | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 30.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes SLC | 2/5 | 4.0/5 | 35.1% | 3.8/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Z4 if: You're seeking a stylish, refined two-seat roadster for everyday use, you appreciate a comfortable ride in a sports car, or you're looking for good standard equipment and infotainment.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the most engaging handling (like a Porsche Boxster) or require more than two seats.
Competitive Position: The BMW Z4 (2019-present) is a strong contender in the premium two-seat roadster segment. While it has significantly closed the gap in driving dynamics compared to its main rival, the Porsche 718 Boxster, it still offers a more refined and comfortable experience, making it highly suitable for daily driving. Its shared platform with the Toyota GR Supra underlines its sporting credentials, and its generous standard equipment, quality interior, and decent practicality for its class make it a compelling choice, especially for those who value style and comfort alongside performance.

(17 reviews)Lovely shape and reliable unique car!!! I drove this car in the late 90s and since I love the style and how smoothly i use to drive the Z3.
Excellent car, absolutely beautiful. Good value for money. Electronic roof. Nothing is missing as far as I am concerned. It’s one hell of a vehicle. I would compare the style like an Aston Martin /Porsche
I have loved driving this car so far. It looks great, so smooth and quiet engine. Not overloaded with gadgets so easy to familiarise yourself and get driving with confidence.
I like the Z4 automatic 2.5 litre model. The mileage is good and the price reasonable.
Nice looks. And features. Too many previous owners. Compared to Mercedes convertible it’s overpriced.
