BMW Z4 (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| More sporting than earlier Z4 generations, but still easy to live with | Not as engaging as a Porsche Boxster |
| Refined engines and a comfortable ride make long drives a pleasure | Relatively high running costs of M40i |
| Decent boot space for a sports car | No fixed-roof version (unless you count the Toyota Supra) |
Quick Summary
The BMW Z4 (2019-present) is a rear-wheel drive, two-seat roadster with a fabric hood that represents a significant step forward from its predecessor. Developed in partnership with Toyota, sharing its platform with the GR Supra, this latest generation features a shorter wheelbase and wider tracks that make it intrinsically sportier and more agile. With a 281-litre boot, high-grade materials, intuitive iDrive infotainment, and comprehensive standard equipment, the Z4 proves remarkably usable for a purpose-built sports car. The low-slung driving position and refined cabin create an upper-crust feel that rewards daily driving.
The Z4 offers a range of four- and six-cylinder petrol engines with impressive fuel economy for a sports car—the entry-level sDrive20i achieves near 40mpg claimed, with real-world figures around 35mpg. Insurance groups range from 30 to 38, whilst road tax varies from £150 to £475 annually depending on the model. Though it still doesn't quite match the Porsche Boxster for steering precision and chassis balance, the gap has narrowed considerably. The Z4 delivers a comfortable ride, good wind noise suppression, and a refined driving experience that makes it an amenable everyday proposition for those seeking a premium sports car without excessive compromise.
Best for: Drivers seeking a refined, usable sports car with premium quality and good everyday practicality; those wanting a more sporting Z4 than earlier generations; buyers who prefer comfort and refinement alongside performance.
Not ideal for: Enthusiasts prioritising the most engaging handling (Porsche Boxster); those seeking a fixed-roof option; drivers concerned about M40i running costs.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW Z4 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 29.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Porsche 718 Boxster | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 41.6% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi TT Mk3 | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 33.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz SLC | 2/5 | 4.0/5 | 31.8% | 3.7/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Z4 if: You seek a refined, usable sports car with premium quality and good everyday practicality, or desire a more sporting Z4 than earlier generations with comfort and refinement alongside performance.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the most engaging handling (Porsche Boxster), require a fixed-roof option, or are concerned about M40i running costs.
Competitive Position: The BMW Z4 (2019-present) is a strong contender in the premium roadster segment, offering refined engines, excellent everyday usability, and a significant improvement over earlier generations. Whilst the Porsche 718 Boxster remains the ultimate choice for driving engagement and handling precision, the Z4 closes the gap considerably with its shorter wheelbase and wider tracks. The Audi TT Mk3 offers an alternative with similar ratings, whilst the Mercedes-Benz SLC lags behind in expert assessment. For buyers seeking a premium sports car that balances performance with comfort and practicality, the Z4 represents an excellent choice that doesn't demand compromise in daily driving.

(17 reviews)Lovely shape and reliable unique car!!! I drove this car in the late 90s and since I love the style and how smoothly i use to drive the Z3.
Excellent car, absolutely beautiful. Good value for money. Electronic roof. Nothing is missing as far as I am concerned. It’s one hell of a vehicle. I would compare the style like an Aston Martin /Porsche
I have loved driving this car so far. It looks great, so smooth and quiet engine. Not overloaded with gadgets so easy to familiarise yourself and get driving with confidence.
I like the Z4 automatic 2.5 litre model. The mileage is good and the price reasonable.
Nice looks. And features. Too many previous owners. Compared to Mercedes convertible it’s overpriced.
