BMW iX (2021-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Breathtaking cabin with a superb standard of finish	Awkward looks aren't to all tastes
Serene, quick, and quiet to drive	Not available with seven seats
Long range of the xDrive50	Very expensive to buy

Quick Summary

The BMW iX is a large, premium all-electric SUV that competes with the Audi e-tron and Tesla Model X. Available with two main battery options, the 71kWh xDrive40 delivers up to 257 miles of WLTP range, whilst the 105kWh xDrive50 offers up to 381 miles. The high-performance M60 variant, arriving in 2022, provides up to 352 miles of range. This first-generation iX marks a new era of design for BMW's premium electric vehicles, featuring bold, divisive styling that's undeniably modern and distinctive.

The iX excels in interior quality and refinement, with luxurious materials, a curved 14.9-inch infotainment screen, and exceptional comfort for all occupants. The flat floor and spacious cabin rival prestige brands like Bentley and Range Rover. With a 500-litre boot (1,750 litres with seats folded), it offers practical storage, though it lacks the seven-seat option and front storage of rivals. Running costs are economical at around 7p per mile, with free VED for pure electric vehicles. The BMW iX handles with sophistication, combining the X7's refinement with the X5's handling prowess, delivering a serene and responsive driving experience.

Best for: Buyers seeking a classy, full-sized luxury electric SUV with exceptional interior quality, refinement, and long-range capability, particularly those who prioritise comfort and technology over practicality.

Not ideal for: Those requiring seven seats, preferring more conventional styling, seeking maximum boot space, or looking for a more affordable premium electric SUV option.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the iX if: You're seeking a classy, full-sized luxury electric SUV with exceptional interior quality, refinement, and long-range capability, particularly if you prioritise comfort and technology over practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You require seven seats, prefer conventional styling, need maximum boot space, or are looking for a more affordable premium electric SUV option.

Competitive Position: The BMW iX stands as the finest luxury electric SUV in its class, offering unparalleled interior quality and refinement that challenges Range Rover and Bentley for ambience and on-road serenity. Whilst the Tesla Model X provides greater practicality with seven-seat options and larger boot space, and the Audi e-tron offers better value, the iX's superior cabin finish, serene driving experience, and long-range xDrive50 variant make it the best choice for discerning buyers who prioritise luxury and technology. The divisive styling and premium pricing are the only drawbacks in an otherwise exceptional vehicle.
