BYD Dolphin Surf (2025-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Roomy interior for such a small car	Small, fiddly touchscreen
Long range for the price	Only four seats
Very generously equipped	Underwhelming charging speeds

Quick Summary

The BYD Dolphin Surf is a cheerful and funky small electric hatchback designed for trendy urbanites seeking to go electric without the size and cost of larger EVs. Available in three variants—Active, Boost, and Comfort—it offers a choice of motor and battery combinations, with ranges up to 200 miles. The entry-level Active is competitively priced at just under £19,000, making it only marginally more expensive than smaller city car EVs like the Dacia Spring and Leapmotor T03, whilst offering considerably more space and practicality. All models feature a distinctive rotating touchscreen, vegan leather upholstery, and impressive standard equipment including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and vehicle-to-load capability.

The Dolphin Surf excels in real-world efficiency, delivering over 4 miles per kWh around town, which helps keep running costs low. Servicing is required only every two years or 20,000 miles, and a lengthy warranty provides peace of mind for long-term ownership. Whilst the rotating touchscreen is gimmicky and occasionally frustrating to use, and the four-seat configuration limits family flexibility, the Dolphin Surf delivers exceptional value for money. It's comfortable and easy to drive, roomy enough for its class, and visually appealing, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical small electric car.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a fun and practical small electric car, urban commuters, and those wanting generous equipment levels without breaking the bank.

Not ideal for: Families needing five seats, drivers prioritising premium touchscreen interfaces, or those requiring rapid charging speeds on entry-level models.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Dolphin Surf if: You're seeking a fun and practical small electric car on a budget, you're an urban commuter, or you want generous equipment levels without spending a fortune.

Consider alternatives if: You need five seats, you prioritise premium touchscreen interfaces, or you require rapid charging speeds on entry-level models.

Competitive Position: The BYD Dolphin Surf is a strong contender in the affordable small electric car market, offering exceptional value for money with generous equipment and impressive real-world efficiency. Whilst the Renault 5 E-Tech edges ahead with superior design and driving dynamics, and the Citroën e-C3 offers slightly better value, the Dolphin Surf remains highly competitive, particularly for budget-conscious buyers. Its roomy interior, long range, and comprehensive standard specification make it an excellent alternative to smaller city car EVs, delivering more practicality and equipment for a comparable price. The four-seat limitation and fiddly touchscreen are minor drawbacks in an otherwise impressive package.
